3 Tips for Self-Critics Trying to Practice Self-Compassion

I was my own worst critic for years, but once I finally started being more compassionate towards myself, my life got significantly better. 


Self-compassion supports strong mental health and a stable sense of self-worth. It offers the benefits of self-esteem, without any of the pitfalls. 


When you’re your own worst critic this practice can seem near impossible, but I’m writing today to promise you it’s not! 


Keep reading to get a few tips on self-compassion for self-critics, plus the roller recipe I used nonstop when I was struggling with this in my own life.


1. Treat yourself the same way you’d treat your own best friend. When you make mistakes, fail to meet your own expectations, or have a bad day, how do you talk to yourself? Are you comforting, reassuring and mindful of the fact that you’re struggling, or do you treat yourself worse than you’d treat your own worst enemy? Start paying attention to that inner dialogue of yours and make sure it’s kind.

 

2. Find a daily affirmation that makes you feel good inside. It may take some searching, but once you find the right one, write it down on a piece of paper and keep it somewhere where you’ll see it. Each morning, before you start your day, say this affirmation to yourself. Say it like you mean it! You could also pair an empowering oil with this affirmation – I do this, and it works great!

 

3. Start the day without social media. It can be so easy to get sucked into the cycle scrolling and comparing your life to other people’s. Not only can it waste hours of your time, but that cycle leaves you feeling like crap. If you’re someone who’s quick to criticize and judge yourself, I highly suggest avoiding Facebook and Instagram for at least the first half hour.


DIY  'I Am Enough'  Roller

This roller was my go-to for when I was struggling to see my own self-worth. I still use it regularly when I’m working towards scary goals or dealing with fear of failure!

 

Ingredients

  • 10 drops Valor EO

  • 10 drops Bergamot EO

  • 10 drops Frankincense EO

  • 10 drops Stress Away EO

  • V-6 oil (or carrier oil of your choice)

Preparation

  1. Drop essential oils into a 10ml roller bottle.

  2. Fill remainder of bottle with V-6 oil (or carrier oil of your choice).

  3. Roll bottle gently between hands to mix (can do before each use).

Application

Roll over your wrists, behind your ears and over your heart daily.
